I, [Insert Your Name], oppose the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s proposed rule imposing stricter time limits on SNAP. There are already strict rules for people who don’t have children or dependents (able bodied adults without dependents — ABAWDs) to get food assistance through SNAP. We should not create additional barriers to those in need by taking away state flexibility or exposing more people to time-limited benefits. This policy will increase the number of people facing hunger in this country – including 80,000 New Yorkers.

Federal nutrition programs like SNAP were designed by Congress to help low-income families AND individuals get the food and nutrition they need. This rule goes against Congress’ intent to protect SNAP through the 2018 Farm Bill, and it undermines our country’s commitment to supporting our neighbors who are struggling to make ends meet.

As a New Yorker and supporter of City Harvest, New York City’s largest food rescue organization, I’m worried that this rule will put more of my neighbors at risk of food insecurity.

The Administration should immediately withdraw its proposal.
