Advocacy Awards

We are dedicated to empowering New Yorkers to advocate against hunger and its root causes.

Since 2020, City Harvest has honored agency partners who have demonstrated exceptional dedication in their advocacy efforts through our annual City Harvest Advocacy Awards. This year, we are thrilled to celebrate the 3rd annual Advocacy Awards, and proudly present awards to a record-breaking 60 awardees.

In addition to the day-to-day work of ensuring that our neighbors have the food that they need, these leaders went above and beyond by making their voices heard and advocating for policies and systems that will help New Yorkers in the long-term.

2023 Advocacy Highlights

  • Policy Platform

Together, we launched the new City Harvest Policy Platform, our north star for advocating against hunger and its root causes across New York City. This new platform marks the culmination of four months engaging over 400 frontline partners with invaluable lived expertise through focus groups, surveys, and comprehensive policy analysis. Thanks to our larger community, we are now better positioned than ever to advocate for a more equitable and sustainable food system.

  • State and Federal Advocacy

Over two dozen leaders traveled to Albany and Washington, D.C., participating in multiple state and federal advocacy days. There, we engaged with key representatives, delivering compelling testimony about the state of hunger in their communities and thanking them for their leadership in supporting policies that improve New Yorkers’ lives.

  • Impactful Campaigns

We made our voices heard in dozens of campaigns, including advocating for SNAP benefits that reflect the true cost of living; allowing SNAP participants to purchase hot and prepared meals with their monthly benefits; lifting the 5-year bar on SNAP participation for immigrants; increasing the availability of halal and kosher foods through TEFAP; investing $10 million per year in the Community Food Projects grant program, which supports community-led solutions that advance food justice; advocating for an equitable Farm Bill that works for New York City; and more.

  • Advocacy Summit

Nearly 50 organizations came together for the inaugural City Harvest Advocacy Summit. This day-long event was an opportunity to deepen our understanding of our collective advocacy efforts, and a chance to help shape the future of our citywide network’s policy advocacy strategy.
